What exactly is On Campus Recruiting?

On Campus Recruiting (OCR) is the widely followed process by which many employers contact, identify and interview potential candidates for hire. Primarily, OCR is done for employers seeking full-time candidates and are looking at graduating seniors and alumni. The process is explained below:

1. A bulletin of who is coming on campus and when is made availble through the Office of Career Development. This bulletin contains minimum requirements that the intended student or alumni must have to be considered for an interview. These pre-requisites will usually have something to do with the major, Overall GPA and graduation date of the candidate. You must meet the minimum requirements to be considered.

2. Most interview schedules have Preselect Deadlines, which means the last possible day that you can turn in your résumé for consideration. This date is usually two weeks before the interview date.

3. Once selected, students and alumni will be instructed to select an interview time. All interviews are conducted in the Office of Career Development (UC 268).

How do you get involved in OCR?

The first thing you must do is to register with Career Development. Once registered, you will have access to the Opportunities Database, which will allow you to look at the recruiting bulletin and sign up for interview schedules that you are eligible for.

You are required to attend one of the On Campus Recruiting Orientation sessions to be eligible for OCR for the current semester.

Please view the On Campus Recruiting Schedule to identify who is coming on campus and when they are interviewing:

I have registered but I can't access any of the schedules.
Your system must be screwed up !?!

If you have completed all the steps for registration, do not automatically assume that the system is "keeping you off a schedule." There are many factors that are involved in making sure that you are eligible:

1. Do you meet the minimum requirements for the schedule? That includes minimum gpa, graduation date, major, and citizenship status. For example: If you registered with Career Development last spring and indicated on your profile that you were a Junior at the time (and then did not update it when you became a Senior), then you will not be eligible for companies looking for Seniors or Alumni. Make sure that your Registration Profile is correct before cursing at the system. As you are updating your profile, keep this in mind: when a company is asking for a minimum GPA, that probably means that at some point, they want to see an official transcript. You lie about GPA = You get no job!

2. Are you an alum who is outside of the range of what companies are recruiting for? Some companies handle college applicants and experienced applicants (or those who have been out of school for a while) differently. If you are not eligible for a schedule because of your grad date, then email Leonard A. Williams, Director of Career Development and indicate your interests. You still need to meet all of the other minimum requirements to be considered.

3. You folks are keeping me from talking to these companies...That's not fair!!! The companies that recruit on campus provide the Office of Career Development with their own set of criteria and guidelines for entry into their companies. We do our best to persuade them to relax some standards if the criteria are too limiting for our students, however, it is the final decision of the company. We make no decisions when it comes to who gets on an interview schedule and who is declined.
