| Understanding Cooperative Education |
What
is Cooperative Education?
Cooperative Education
began in the early 1900s when Dr. Herman Schneider, an engineering professor
at the University of Cincinnati, established a program so his students could
obtain concrete experience in addition to their academic studies. Working
with local employers, he implemented the alternating schedule between school
and work that is used today.
Overview:
A progressive, practical experience
Generally follows an alternating plan of 2 work periods or a minimum of 4
semesters of part-time work
A Full-time work experience (i.e.: Attend UNO in the Fall, Work with employer
in Spring, Attend UNO in Summer, Work with employer in Fall, etc.)
What
is the difference between Cooperative Education and Internships?
Cooperative Education experiences are:
A minimum of 2 semesters of full-time work or a minimum of 4 semesters of
part-time work
Not for academic credit
Paid or salaried positions
Progressive positions (duties increase each semester)
How
does Cooperative Education benefit the student?
Cooperative Education offers students organized work experiences that relate
to their academic major and career interests. They are to gain practical,
hands-on training that enables them to be viable potential job candidates.
How
does Cooperative Education Work at UNO?
Students
must be eligible each semester in order to continue with their coop employment.

Application
Process
Students who wish to enroll in the Cooperative Education program must do the
following:
To participate
in a Cooperative Education Experience, students must complete the application
process. Each Student must submit a resume and application to Career Development
to be eligible. (In addition, other requirements may apply, based on the specific
company.) Career Development will submit the packet to the company who will
then interview candidates of their choosing.
How
much can I get paid?
Technical positions generally receive higher salary
Salaries range from $6 - $12 per hour
May include additional benefits (paid holidays & sick days, insurance,
etc.) depending on the employer
When
will I get a job?
Cooperative Education positions are not guaranteed and they should not come
in place of any additional employment that a student may have. If you are
obtaining a Cooperative Education position as a form of long-term employment,
please consider that Cooperative Education positions can be cancelled at any
point based on the employers' needs. You will be notified by mail, email or
phone from the employer or the Office of Career Development regarding an interview
with the employer. It is a professional interview and the employer may have
other candidates, again, nothing is guaranteed.
I
want to work at the Corps of Engineers. How does that work?
The process is exactly the same, however, once your information is sent to
the Corps, they will place your file in "rotation" to managers and
supervisors there. Based on the needs of their departments, you will be contacted
for interviewing with one or more managers (depending on major and profile).
The normal hiring time from application submission to first day at the Corps
is about 3 weeks (if not longer in some cases). Please also note that you
will be subject to a Federal Background and Security check.
The
Student's Role in Cooperative Education...
Adhere to the employer's work schedule and Co-op policies and procedures
Assume personal and professional responsibilities for actions and activities
Meet academic, performance, and conduct standards set forth by UNO and the
Employer
Provide the employer and school Co-op coordinator with progress reports after
each work period
Notify the school and employer of any changes in status
I'm
now in Cooperative Education. What do I do?
All Cooperative Education students must adhere to the following:
- Enrolled in
a Cooperative Education class (COBA, COLA, COEN, COSC, COGS or COED) for
the semesters that they are working. You are not required to enroll in the
class when not working at the site.
- Don't get
fired
- Complete a
Cooperative Education/Internship
Experience survey online at the end of each semester.
