What is Career Counseling?

Career Frequently Asked Questions Home > What is Career Counseling?

I don't know what I want to do with my life; who should I talk to in Career Development that can help me make the right career choice?

Rather than contacting someone in the Office of Career Development, students who are unsure of the career path they want to pursue should contact UNO Counseling Services (504-280-6683, website ). Individual career counseling is available for students seeking assistance in exploring career options. The goal of career counseling is to help the student make decisions about career directions. Once you have chosen a particular career, the Career Development staff can help you determine a plan for pursuing that career.

So what's the difference between Counseling Services and Career Development?

Counseling Services provides:
- Personal Counseling (Individual, group, couples and/or family sessions. Includes assessments, psychiatric evaluation and follow-up, psychological and intelligence testing, and conflict resolution mediation.)
- Workshops and Support Groups (anger, anxiety management, career and life planning, diversity awareness, interpersonal relationships, self esteem, study skills, time management, etc.)
- Career Counseling (individual sessions and career assessments, including Campbell Interest and Skill Survey, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, and Career Occupational Preference System)

Career Development provides:
- Assistance with writing career search correspondence (resumes, cover letters, etc.)
- Job search assistance (job listings, information about finding jobs in particular career fields)
- Information about careers people in various majors commonly choose

- Networking opportunities with employers (career fairs, seminars, on campus interviews)
- Listings for internships and cooperative education jobs
- Workshops and panel discussions focusing on specific career fields (Careers in Writing & Publishing, Careers in Sports Management, Careers in Pharmaceutical Sales, etc.)
- Salary information for different career fields and different geographic areas
